Home Health Depot Hero Fighting Muscular Dystrophy
Meet Home Health Depot Patient Katrina Gossett...
Katrina has been a patient of Home Health Depot since she was 13 years old. Katrina has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a genetic neuromuscular condition characterized by muscle atrophy and weakness. As a result, she uses a power wheelchair to have the independence she needs to keep up with her active lifestyle.
In fact, Katrina received her last three power wheelchairs from Home Health Depot. She shares that the professionals at Home Health Depot have always taken the time to work with her to make sure her wheelchair was ideally customized to meet her exact needs. By making these adaptations to her wheelchair, Katrina can now get around easily, go back and forth to work, live downtown, and be an independent member of society.
Katrina stated, “Home Health Depot has given me the gift of independence. For anyone who uses a wheelchair to get around, having a wheelchair that fits your needs and allows you to do everything that you want to do is independence.”
With a supporting family at her side, Katrina graduated at the top of her class from Notre Dame and then went on to graduate with honors from the University of Chicago Law School where she was named a Kirkland and Ellis Scholar and was selected for Order of the Coif.
Katrina shares, "I want people to remember that people with disabilities are just like everyone else. A disability is just one aspect of a person, and it doesn't define who you are."
Katrina lives independently in Indianapolis and has a thriving legal career as an Associate at Baker & Daniels. She has also published numerous articles, served as a presenter, and is active in numerous civic organizations including:
- Governor's Planning Council for People with Disabilities
- Center for Youth and Adults with Conditions of Childhood
- MDA Young Adult Social Group
Katrina said, "The most rewarding experience for me is to work with young kids who have Muscular Dystrophy...to share my story and encourage them to reach their goals.” When asked how she does it all, she replied, "I make giving back to others a priority. There are only so many hours in the day, but when I am committed to something, I make sure it happens."
Home Health Depot applauds Katrina for her many accomplishments. We are truly inspired by you!
